D. Scott Carruthers calling about old debt - feeling pressured

I've been getting calls from the Law Offices of D. Scott Carruthers, APLC for the past week or so, and they keep leaving voicemails saying I need to call them back urgently about a debt collection matter. They mentioned something about possible legal action if I don't respond, and honestly it's been keeping me up at night.

The thing is, I'm pretty sure this debt is past the statute of limitations in my state, but I'm not 100% certain. I've heard that if I call them back and acknowledge the debt or make any payment arrangement, it could restart the clock on how long they have to sue me. But I'm also scared that if I don't respond at all, they might actually file a lawsuit and I won't know until it's too late.

I looked up their address online and found they're based in California, but I'm in a different state. Does that matter at all? Can they actually sue me where I live? Also, the calls feel really aggressive and threatening - is that even legal?

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance or guidance from anyone who's dealt with this firm before. Should I answer the next time they call? Should I send a certified letter asking them to stop contacting me? Or do I need to get a lawyer involved right away? I don't have much money, so hiring an attorney feels overwhelming, but I also don't want to mess this up.

Really appreciate any advice from people who've been in a similar spot. Thanks for reading.
