What Problems Can Authors Face During the Book Distribution Process?

[aimeemoore]

I'm learning about publishing and recently started wondering what happens after a book is ready for distribution. What parts of the book distribution process usually cause the most trouble for new authors? How are returns, shipping delays, inventory, and bookstore orders normally handled? I'd appreciate honest advice from authors who have been through distribution, especially about mistakes they wish they had avoided.
